How to Claim Flight Delay Compensation — Step by Step

how to claim flight delay compensation

If your flight was delayed, cancelled, or overbooked, you may be entitled to up to €600 per passenger under EC261/2004 or UK261. Here is exactly how to claim — and what to do if the airline refuses.

No win, no fee. Our experts handle everything for you.

Step 1: Gather Your Evidence

Before you do anything, write down exactly what happened — the flight number, your scheduled and actual departure and arrival times, and the reason the airline gave for the delay or cancellation. Take photos of the departure board if you can. Keep all your boarding passes, booking confirmations, and any expense receipts from the airport (food, accommodation, transport).

Step 2: Check Your Eligibility

Check your eligibility using three questions: 1. Was your flight delayed over 3 hours at arrival, cancelled with less than 14 days notice, or were you denied boarding? 2. Did your flight depart from an EU or UK airport, or arrive in the EU/UK on an EU/UK carrier? 3. Was the disruption within the airline’s control (i.e. not genuine extraordinary circumstances)? If yes to all three, you have a valid claim.

Step 3: Submit to the Airline

You can submit a claim directly to the airline using their online compensation form. Include your flight details, the delay duration, and a clear request for EC261/UK261 compensation stating the exact amount you are owed. Airlines are required to respond within a reasonable time, usually 4–8 weeks.

Step 4: Escalate if Rejected

If the airline rejects your claim or ignores you, you can escalate to an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) body in the relevant country — for example, CEDR or PACT in the UK, or national enforcement bodies in EU countries. This is free for passengers. If ADR fails, small claims court is the final option.
